Marcos: Legal framework must benefit the public
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Friday called on ASEAN member states to guarantee that legal framework works for the benefit of the people.
Marcos made the remark at the opening ceremony of the 13th ASEAN Law Ministers Meeting (ALAWMM) in Taguig City.
In his speech, Marcos said member states should work on promoting the idea that “the law continues to be the great equalizer of our time.”
“This is especially true now as we have seen how corruption, inefficiency, and impunity can erode the moral bases of our societies,” Marcos said.
“Therefore, we must ensure that the legal framework works for the benefit of our peoples,” he added.
Marcos reaffirmed Manila’s active role in building a stronger and unified ASEAN community, which has been grounded in the principles of fairness, mutual trust, and rule of law.
After the opening ceremony, the ASEAN ministers will sign the ASEAN Treaty on Extradition (ATE), which is a landmark agreement that establishes a uniform legal framework for extradition among member states.
This treaty represents a pivotal step toward enhanced regional cooperation in combating crime and ensuring accountability across borders.
It further reinforces ASEAN's shared commitment to strengthening legal cooperation, upholding criminal accountability, and safeguarding peace and security across the region. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
