AFP warns public vs. online content inciting armed struggle
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has cautioned the public against sharing or engaging with online content that promotes armed struggle, rebellion, or acts of violence.
“Such acts are punishable under Philippine law. The AFP reminds everyone that encouraging or glorifying armed action undermines peace and endangers communities,” the AFP said in a statement.
“Posts that promote violence or the overthrow of the government will be addressed through appropriate action, in coordination with law enforcement agencies, while upholding the rule of law and freedom of expression within legal bounds,” it added.
The warning followed an armed encounter involving suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro on January 1.
Amid criticism from a rights group, the AFP said the operation was a legitimate, intelligence-driven mission against the rebels.
“Air support was used only to protect troops on the ground, in full compliance with the Rules of Engagement and with strict regard for civilian safety. No civilian communities were targeted,” the AFP earlier said.
“The AFP remains committed to protecting communities, upholding human rights, and neutralizing armed threats that endanger peace and security in the region,” it added.—MCG, GMA Integrated News
