PCG gets advanced SAR planning system for maritime safety, disaster response

PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan

The Philippine Coast Guard has acquired and operationalized the Search and Rescue Optimal Planning System (SAROPS) from the United States Coast Guard (USCG) as part of its efforts to upgrade the country’s maritime safety and disaster response capabilities.

In a statement, PCG spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab said the SAROPS will enhance the whole-of-government approach to search and rescue operations by strengthening coordination among key agencies.

“Using advanced predictive modeling and environmental data analysis, SAROPS enables faster, more accurate, and more efficient planning of search and rescue missions,” Cayabyab said.

“The system supports unified command, informed decision-making, and optimal deployment of government assets during maritime incidents, disasters, and humanitarian assistance operations,” she added.

The SAROPS is a software system used by the USCG for maritime search planning.

The PCG said its operationalization of SAROPS is in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to strengthen maritime safety through international partnerships and practical cooperation.

The Philippines is now part of a select group of maritime nations equipped with advanced search and rescue planning systems that strengthen national resilience and maritime safety.

The operationalization of the SAROPS also fulfilled PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan’s vision to equip the PCG with world-class and science-based search and rescue planning systems.

“This milestone represents a significant leap in our national search and rescue capability and reinforces our commitment to ensure that no life at sea is beyond reach,” Gavan added. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
