Nartatez reminds cops of discipline, professionalism after deadly Negros Oriental shooting
Philippine National Police (PNP) acting chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. on Sunday ordered unit commanders and office heads to remind their personnel to uphold discipline and professionalism following the shooting incident in Sibulan, Negros Oriental.
“Command responsibility applies at all levels, and failure to enforce standards will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” Nartatez said in a statement.
Nartatez's statement came after a cop from the Sibulan Municipal Police Station surrendered for allegedly shooting a woman inside a bar on Friday, January 9.
Three police officers responded to the scene, but according to initial reports, they were also shot while transporting Saycon in a car.
Saycon reportedly fled but surrendered to the Tanjay City Police Station at around 10:40 p.m.
Nartatez ordered the Police Regional Office in Negros Island Region to examine all possible angles of the incident to ensure there are no “cover-ups.”
He said the police officer will face criminal and administrative cases.
The PNP acting chief also warned police officers from engaging in any act that would compromise the PNP’s integrity and image.
“All PNP personnel are reminded that they are expected to remain physically, emotionally, and psychologically fit to perform their duties at all times. Any behavior that impairs judgment, weakens control, or poses risk to others is unacceptable,” he said.
“Wearing the uniform is a privilege that carries immense responsibility. Discipline, accountability, and integrity are non-negotiable in ensuring that the organization remains worthy of the trust and confidence of the Filipino people,” he added. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News
