Sara Duterte's lawyers on SC upholding impeachment rule: The matter is now closed

The defense team of Vice President Sara Duterte on Thursday said that the government should “move on” and address other pressing concerns now that the Supreme Court (SC) has affirmed its ruling that declared the articles of impeachment against her as unconstitutional.

In a statement sent by Attorney Michael Poa, Duterte’s defense team acknowledged the resolution of the SC denying the motion for reconsideration filed by the House of Representatives to reverse the high court’s earlier decision on the impeachment case.

“With these issues settled by the Court, the matter is now closed. We should then move on to address the nation’s other pressing concerns,” Duterte’s lawyers said.

They also extended gratitude to the SC for a ruling, which they said “definitively lays down clear and authoritative guidance on the constitutional limits and proper treatment of impeachment proceedings.”

Earlier in the day, SC court spokesperson Atty. Camille Ting announced that the SC En Banc “denied with finality” by a unanimous vote of all those participating, the motion for reconsideration filed by the House which sought to reverse the decision that declared the articles of impeachment against Duterte as unconstitutional.

The Vice President was impeached by the House of Representatives on February 5, 2025, with over 200 lawmakers endorsing the complaint.

In August last year, the Senate voted to transfer to the archives the articles of impeachment against her, following the Supreme Court decision declaring her impeachment unconstitutional. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
