Mary Jane Veloso's case under review by Office of Executive Secretary

The Office of the Executive Secretary is studying the provisions, as well as the Philippine government's meeting with Indonesia, regarding the case of Mary Jane Veloso, Malacañang said Tuesday.

Veloso, the Filipina who was convicted abroad for drug trafficking, recently appealed to authorities to grant her freedom and allow her to take care of her elderly parents and her children after 16 years of being apart.

''Kanina lang po ay nakausap po natin mismo ang sa OES at sinasabi po nila na aaralin po kung ano pa iyong mga probisyon at kung ano ba iyong minutes of the meeting nila sa bansang Indonesia at prerogative pa rin po ng Pangulo ang masusunod,'' Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro said in a briefing.

(We've talked to the OES and they said they will study the provisions and the minutes of the meeting with Indonesia. The prerogative of the President will be followed.)

Indonesia agreed to transfer Veloso to the Philippines where she will be detained. Veloso spent 15 years behind bars in detention following her conviction for drug trafficking.

She was initially meted out a death sentence, but this was commuted in 2015 amid a strong appeal from Philippine officials led by the late President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy Aquino III.

Her parents, Cesar and Celia, had asked the Supreme Court to release her on grounds that her detention in the Philippines has no legal basis.  —VAL, GMA Integrated News
