US Embassy calls on American citizens to avoid rallies on Feb. 25
The United States Embassy on Monday reminded American citizens in the Philippines to avoid taking part in the protests on February 25, where large-scale anti-corruption rallies are expected.
“U.S. citizens should avoid the rallies. Foreign nationals found engaging in a protest or mass demonstration could be considered in violation of their immigration status,” the embassy said in its message.
Another “Trillion Peso March” will take place in various parts of Quezon City on Wednesday. It coincides with the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.
The activities will take place at EDSA Shrine, the EDSA People Power Monument, and Eton Centris.
The embassy also warned of possible traffic congestion.
“The primary gathering sites are expected to be the EDSA Shrine at the intersection of EDSA and Ortigas Avenue, the People Power Monument on White Plains Avenue, and the Eton Centris complex at the corner of EDSA and Quezon Avenue,” it said. “U.S. citizens should anticipate significant traffic congestion, public transport disruptions, and a heavy security presence in these areas throughout the day.”
Further, the embassy advised its citizens to “exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, as even peaceful rallies/demonstrations have the potential to turn violent without warning.” —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
