Protesters breach police blockade on EDSA

Several protesters on Wednesday afternoon were able to break through a police blockade along EDSA during their march in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the People Power Revolution.

The marchers were at the middle of the EDSA-Ortigas interchange as of posting time.

They were chanting, "Ikulong na 'yan, mga kurakot" (Jail the corrupt), a battle cry of various organizations against corruption in government amid the multi-billion peso flood control scandal.

Bayan president Renato “Nato” Reyes Jr. called the actions of the police “repressive and totally unnecessary.”

“We are supposed to celebrate people power, not police power. The repressive and totally unnecessary police blockade caused disruption of traffic and public inconvenience,” Reyes told GMA News Online in a message.

“The people merely asserted their constitutional rights and marched to EDSA Shrine. We are here now for the program. Forty years after EDSA, those in positions of power have not learned anything,” he added.

GMA News Online has sought comment from the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) but it has yet to respond as of posting time.

On February 25, 1986, the EDSA People Power Revolution ousted the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. — father of the current president Marcos Jr.— and installed Corazon Aquino, widow of slain former senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., as president.
