The Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday rejected claims that Philippine public schools are being used as platforms for foreign political influence, following warnings from a maritime security expert about alleged Chinese efforts to shape public sentiment.

In a statement, DepEd said it “categorically rejects” any attempt to use basic education institutions for propaganda or external political agendas, stressing that schools must remain neutral spaces focused on learning.

The agency emphasized that all programs and partnerships are guided by the 1987 Constitution and existing laws, which mandate the protection of national sovereignty and the promotion of Filipino learners’ best interests.

DepEd also underscored that while it engages in international cooperation, such partnerships are subject to strict regulations and safeguards to prevent undue foreign influence.

Citing DepEd Order No. 32, s. 2019, the department reiterated that public schools are designated as “zones of peace,” meant to protect learners not only from physical harm but also from exposure to political or ideological agendas inconsistent with Philippine values.

“Any activity or partnership that contravenes these principles is inconsistent with DepEd policy and will not be tolerated,” the agency said.

The statement came after a maritime security expert warned that China is allegedly using media and educational institutions to influence public opinion in the Philippines.

DepEd added that it is verifying the allegations and reviewing existing protocols, while also moving to strengthen its vetting and approval processes for externally initiated programs and activities.

The department assured the public it remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of the education system and the welfare of Filipino learners.—MCG, GMA Integrated News
