The Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) will conduct regular body checks on cadets as part of efforts to prevent hazing and other forms of abuse within the institution.

At a press briefing on Monday, the Philippine National Police (PNPA) said the move aims to ensure early detection of injuries that may be linked to unauthorized physical activities or maltreatment.

“Sa kautusan po ni [PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.] kay [PNPA acting director Police Brigadier General Redrico Maranan] na isagawa immediately ‘yung tinatawag nating body checks or inspections,” PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño said.

“Ito po ay gagawin every month, araw-araw, linggo-linggo upang tuluyan nang masugpo o maiwasan ang hazing sa PNPA,” he added.

(This will be done every month, every day, every week to completely curb or prevent hazing in the PNPA.)

This is the latest development at the PNPA after over 20 fourth class cadets sustained severe injuries from a hazing incident inside the academy in Silang, Cavite on Good Friday, April 3.

The victims reportedly suffered burns and injuries after various parts of their bodies were exposed to a mixture of drain cleaner and muriatic acid, according to police investigators.

Three suspects were initially arrested and four more suspects have been identified.

Following the incident, the PNPA director and eight other officers were relieved from their posts.

Criminal charges were also filed against seven PNPA staff and two police officers.

Initial findings showed that the hazing stemmed from an internal issue involving a cadet who intended to drop out, with underclassmen allegedly punished after being held responsible for the situation.

Another hazing incident inside the campus was discovered on April 19. Two cadets sustained bruises on their feet after allegedly being struck by two upperclassmen.

Maranan said the two cadets involved were placed in custody. —RF, GMA News
