7,300-strong security force deployed for ASEAN Summit 2026 in Cebu
More than 7,300 personnel were deployed to handle security and emergency response for the 48th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders’ Summit in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, from May 7 to 8, 2026.
Philippine National Police chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. launched the deployment on Saturday, as he conducted aerial and onsite inspections at key areas in the Central Visayas.
The inspection assessed operational readiness, validated deployment plans, and ensured seamless coordination of security forces across critical sites, transport routes, and event venues.
Under Task Group Central Visayas are the PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Coast Guard, Department of Health, Office of Civil Defense, among other government agencies.
The deployment covers site security, convoy protection, coastal and airspace monitoring, traffic management, emergency medical response, and rapid incident handling.
“This operation is the result of extensive planning and sustained coordination, drawing from established best practices in previous national and international events. We are fully prepared to ensure a safe and secure ASEAN Summit,” Nartatez said.
According to the PNP, foreign delegates are expected to arrive as early as May 5, and to depart by May 12.
Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro earlier assured her province’s readiness for the ASEAN Summit 2026, as local officials guaranteed that security, traffic, and venue preparations are in place.
She said security preparations are already 80% complete, with enhanced emergency response systems and hospitals on “code blue” alert throughout the Summit.
Delegations are expected to be concentrated in Lapu-Lapu City, where key summit activities will take place, including meetings at the newly constructed Mactan Expo in Mactan Newtown.
The Philippines currently chairs ASEAN in 2026 with the theme "Navigating Our Future, Together," highlighting regional unity, resilience, and a commitment to a people-centered community, focusing on navigating challenges through collective action.
Due to the ongoing Middle East conflict, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. ordered a recalibration of the country's hosting of the ASEAN 2026 Summits and Related Summits, scaling down non-essential bloc activities to save on expenses. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA News
