Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III on Monday pushed for the immediate passage of the Kalinga Act, or the Komprehensibong Alalay sa Livelihood, Inflation, Negosyo, at Goods Assistance Act, in response to the burden brought about by rising oil prices.

Dy was referring to a measure that includes provisions to help manage fuel prices and ensure stable energy supply.

It also covers assistance programs, price stability for essential goods, and support for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to keep operations running.

“In every decision, our guidepost is our oath to uphold the welfare of our people and to ensure transparency and accountability in government," Dy said in a speech.

"That is why, with Majority Leader Sandro Marcos, we are pushing for the Kalinga Act of 2026, which would boost the capacity of every Filipino and strengthen our economy, as well as government support for our people,” he added.

Dy also urged the passage of bills on anti-political dynasty and national land use.

“Let us continue to work with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and move forward with a whole-of-government approach that is coordinated, decisive, and anchored on long-term national interest,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dy cited the ongoing Middle East conflict, which began after a joint US-Israel operation on February 27 struck Iran, reportedly to halt its missile program.

Iran has since retaliated against US allies in the Gulf, triggering exchanges of airstrikes that damaged critical infrastructure, including oil refineries, and disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a major global oil transit route.

The conflict has pushed fuel prices higher worldwide, including in the Philippines, where prices have reportedly breached P100 per liter due to heavy reliance on imported oil.

An oil price increase of around P2 per liter is expected on Tuesday, May 5.—MCG, GMA News
