Ex-DPWH chief Bonoan stayed overnight at PNP hospital

Former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary Manuel Bonoan stayed overnight at a hospital after his surrender to authorities on Monday, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Tuesday.

“He is still here. Later, we’ll be releasing updates about his condition,” PNP Public Information Office acting chief Police Colonel Allen Rae Co told GMA News Online in a message.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said Bonoan’s doctor is expected to make a diagnosis around noon.

“Doctor will make a diagnosis after lunch,” Remulla told GMA News Online.

Bonoan was brought to the PNP General Hospital in Camp Crame, Quezon City after surrendering to authorities on Monday.

According to Super Radyo dzBB’s Mark Makalalad, the PNP Health Service on Tuesday said Bonoan has shown improvement after suffering a hypertension.

PNP Health Service director Police Brigadier General Portia Manalad said Bonoan's condition improved after he was given medication and allowed to rest.

Manalad said Bonoan's possible discharge would depend on whether he receives clearance from his attending physician and request from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).

Bonoan voluntarily appeared before the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) office after the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division issued an arrest warrant against him.

In a resolution dated June 1, 2026, the anti-graft court found probable cause for the issuance of warrants of arrest against the following:

• Bonoan
• Senator Jinggoy Estrada
• DPWH NCR Assistant District Engineer Denryl Caesar Sanchez Cortuna
• DPWH NCR District Engineer Manny Bumagat Bulusan
• DPWH NCR District Engineer Arturo Lombres Gonzales, Jr.

All of them are now in the custody of authorities.

After the booking procedures, the accused were transferred to the Sandiganbayan and later detained.

Asked about the condition of Senator Jinggoy Estrada, who spent his first night inside the New Quezon City Jail in Barangay Payatas, Remulla said he has yet to receive reports on the matter.
