The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Monday directed all affected local government units (LGUs) in Mindanao to implement emergency response measures after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake and powerful aftershocks struck the region.

The directive came after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered LGUs and national agencies to immediately coordinate disaster response, monitoring, and public safety operations in areas affected by the tremors.

The DILG said the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Regions XI and XII has been placed under Code Red Alert Status, with all off-duty personnel ordered on standby as authorities conduct rapid damage assessments.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has recalled and deployed personnel in the same regions to assist in disaster response and maintain public safety.

The department also urged residents to remain vigilant, follow the instructions of local authorities, and observe evacuation protocols, especially in coastal communities where tsunami-related hazards and aftershocks remain possible.

"The safety of our people remains our foremost priority. We call on all local governments, responders, and communities to work together, remain alert, and take all necessary precautions as authorities continue assessment and response operations in affected areas," the DILG said. —LDF, GMA News
