Rene Baterbonia's remains arrive in Davao City
The remains of Ateneo basketball player Rene Baterbonia arrived in Davao City early Friday morning aboard a private plane.
According to a report of GMA Regional TV’s Efren Mamac on GMA News’ Unang Balita, the aircraft carrying Baterbonia's remains landed at the Davao International Airport around 2:43 a.m.
His family members, friends, and acquaintances were present to receive him.
With police assistance, the convoy carrying Baterbonia's remains proceeded to a funeral home before transport to the Ateneo de Davao University Senior High School - Bangkal Campus, where a wake will be held.
In a statement, Ateneo de Davao University said a public viewing will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.
Viewing hours on Saturday and Sunday will be from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The university also announced that Holy Masses will be conducted from Friday to Sunday beginning at 7 p.m.
Family members, friends, loved ones, and community members have been invited to share stories, memories, and tributes in honor of the student-athlete.
After the wake in Davao City, Baterbonia's remains will be brought to his hometown in Agusan del Sur.
The schedule for his burial has yet to be announced.
Baterbonia and fellow Ateneo student-athlete Divine Adili died due to drowning during a team building activity at a beach resort in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8.
Ateneo men's basketball coaches and players as well as barangay officials, hotel staff, and the team's bus driver have been subpoenaed for the probe, according to the police.
The Aurora Police Provincial Office said there was no indication of foul play in the incident based on its initial investigation.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said Thursday that its probe will focus on possible "criminal negligence" in the deaths of the two student-athletes. —Joviland Rita/ VAL, GMA News
