The number of leptospirosis cases in the first six months of 2026 in the country has increased compared to the same period the previous year, the Department of Health (DOH) reported Wednesday.

DOH logged 2,177 leptospirosis cases from January 4 to June 6, 2026.

This is equivalent to a 6% increase compared to the same period in 2025, which recorded 2,045 leptospirosis cases.

DOH said most of the cases are farmers working in plantation fields who were exposed to mud and water that may have been contaminated with urine of infected animals.

Leptospirosis is caused by bacteria spread through the urine or feces of infected animals, mostly rats, and affects both humans and animals.

The Health department reminded the public to practice following actions to protect themselves from leptospirosis.

  1. Wear boots
  2. Immediately wash the feet with clean water and soap
  3. Avoid further exposure if you have an open wound

DOH also urged the public to consult a doctor before taking any medicine for leptopirosis. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA News
