Palace: No term extension for Marantan
Malacañang on Thursday said the active service of Calabarzon regional director Police Brigadier General Hansel Marantan will no longer be extended.
This came despite the request of Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla for the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) to extend for one year the active service of Marantan, who is set to reach the mandatory police retirement age of 56 on July 10, 2026.
Palace Press Officer Usec. Claire Castro said that Marantan can still provide help in other ways.
“Wala pong extension para po kay General Marantan. At maaari po siyang makatulong sa ibang pamamaraan,” Castro announced at a press briefing.

In a letter addressed to the NAPOLCOM, Remulla said the request to extend the Calabarzon top cop’s active service was made “in the interest of the service to ensure continuity in the execution of critical and ongoing high-impact operations currently being spearheaded by Gen. Marantan.”
Following the announcement, Remulla said he respects the call of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to reject his request.
“I fully respect the President’s decision,” Remulla told GMA News Online.
To recall, Marantan was dismissed from the service in 2014 in connection with an alleged rubout in Atimonan, Quezon.
Marantan figured in the case in January 2013 where 13 individuals were killed by law enforcers after their two-vehicle convoy allegedly ignored a first checkpoint in Atimonan town.
He was later reinstated in 2017 after the NAPOLCOM appellate board approved his plea.
In 2025, a Manila court acquitted Marantan and 11 other police officers of murder charges over their involvement in the shootout. — RSJ, GMA News
