Palace to citizens: Help curb waste

Malacañang on Tuesday urged the public to do its role in keeping the streets clean after floods brought out massive amounts of trash.

After the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat triggered widespread flooding, trash has been piling up on streets and washing up on the banks of waterways. Tons of garbage from Manila Bay washed up in Baclaran in Paranaque City, nearly covering water along the shoreline.

“Hindi po kakayanin ng gobyerno na magtrabaho ng magtrabaho pero ang ating mga kababayan ay pabaya ng pabaya tapos magtuturo kung sino ang may kasalanan – lahat po tayo dito ay dapat kumilos, hindi puwedeng nagkukuya-kuyakoy lang tayo lagi,” Castro said in a Palace briefing.

Castro said that the sheer amount of trash was surprising. She said that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. wants people to help one another on the issue.

The Palace executive said barangay officials are among the frontliners that should help instill more discipline in waste management for their communities. She said they are the ones who have access to CCTV cameras.

“Although alam nating magsisipag sila pero mas magdoble pa po ng pagtatrabaho para po maiwasan natin ito kasi tayo rin po lahat ang magiging biktima nito, ng mga basurang itinapon natin, talagang babalik at babalik sa atin,” Castro said.
