Vice President Sara Duterte on Wednesday visited the wake of a Grade 10 student who was killed in the shooting at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City.

The shooting on Tuesday left two students dead, including the alleged shooter, while another student was injured and is recovering in the hospital.

Based on initial information, the shooter was able to enter the premises of the school carrying a high-powered firearm and a .45 caliber pistol. Meanwhile, 21 other students had panic attacks and suffered minor abrasions during the commotion.

The Department of Education (DepEd), meanwhile, is looking into possible factors surrounding the incident, including reports that the alleged shooter had been bullied and possible online influence. However, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said these remain unconfirmed.

Angara said DepEd is also looking at strengthening student support, including hiring counselor associates and expanding mental health, mentoring, and peer-support programs in schools.

He stressed that school safety should go beyond physical security measures, saying schools also need to strengthen their psychological and socio-emotional support for students. —VAL, GMA News
