PNP to tighten firearm security rules for cops amid Ateneo de Zamboanga shooting

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday said it will strengthen measures for the security of firearms issued to its personnel following the fatal shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

PNP said its chief, Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., ordered commanders to remind cops about the proper storage and handling of firearms when they are off duty and at home.

“We remind all our personnel to exercise utmost responsibility in securing their firearms, especially when they are off duty and at home. Firearms must never be left in places where children or unauthorized persons can gain access to them,” he said.

Firearm accountability reminders should be included in unit briefings and formations to raise awareness among personnel and prevent incidents involving improperly secured firearms, according to the PNP chief.

The PNP issued the directive following recent school shootings involving firearms reportedly issued to government personnel.

On August 18, two students of Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School, including a 14-year-old shooter, died in a shooting incident.

Nearly two months earlier, two students, aged 14 and 15, of San Jose National High School in Tacloban City opened fire, killing three students.

“Here in the PNP, we will continue to remind our personnel that owning or carrying a firearm comes with a serious responsibility. One moment of negligence can result in the loss of life. We support calls for stricter accountability among gun owners. Responsible storage is non-negotiable,” Nartatez said.—AOL, GMA News
