2,407 more Pinoys to get DOST scholarship in 2027

More Filipinos may have the opportunity to secure scholarships from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), with the program’s proposed budget increased to P8.67 billion under the 2027 proposed national budget.

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) said the additional budget will support 67,504 scholars nationwide, a rise from 65,097 scholars funded under the 2026 General Appropriations Act.

This is equivalent to a 3.70% increase in the number of government-supported scholars.

Of the proposed budget for DOST scholarships, P7.55 billion will be allocated to the DOST-Science Education Institute (SEI), which manages undergraduate and graduate scholarships and specialized training programs.

Meanwhile, P1.12 billion is allotted for the Philippine Science High School System (PSHSS) to continue providing specialized secondary education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

In February, the DOST Science Education Institute said it will only accept 8,500 new undergraduate scholars in 2026 due to budget constraints.

DOST-SEI explained that this is because only P7.6 billion was approved from its proposed P11 billion for fiscal year 2026 to expand scholarship intake, improve benefits, and strengthen capacity-building initiatives.

The limited number of slots has resulted in an estimated 8.3% acceptance rate, the lowest in the history of the DOST Undergraduate Scholarship. —VAL, GMA News
