Sacrificial lambs versus scapegoats in the Solis plagiarism case
By MARLON ANTHONY TONSON
A case of mixed metaphors in allusion to Mark Joseph Solis.
In this piece on a social media news site, Mr. [Lance] Katigbak mistakes what a "sacrificial lamb" is – i.e., an innocent – with a "scapegoat", i.e., an animal upon which the sins of a community are heaped upon before it gets banished or killed.
But neither is Solis a scapegoat.
"Cyberbullying" – or more precisely, cyberbashing (since Solis is already of age) – is not the moral equivalent of the public's online outrage. The mechanics of morality are markedly different: the victim in this sordid affair is the public, while the villain is the plagiarist. Not the other way around.
The author's naivete regarding crime, courts, and the online community is plainly evident. – KDM, GMA News
