4 houses swept away after dike breaks in Pampanga

A strong surge of water along the Porac-Gumain River washed away four houses in Lubao, Pampanga after part of a nearby dike gave way.

In an interview with Super Radyo dzBB on Friday, Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda said part of the dike broke due to the strong influx of water coming down from the mountain.

The houses that were washed away had been illegally built along the dike, Pineda said.

“Mag-iimbestiga ako bakit sila nandoon, nakapatong sa may dike,” she said.

(I will investigate why they were there, on the dike.)

No one was injured when the houses gave way, but the affected residents were told to relocate. Pineda said authorities also advised other residents in nearby areas to relocate.

Pineda clarified that the incident did not involve the collapse of the Sto. Cristo Dam.

She said the dam was able to hold the water coming down from the mountain. However, fallen trees and other debris had blocked some of its spillways.

The Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) has been enhanced by a low pressure area east northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, triggering widespread rains over parts of Luzon that are expected to continue until early next week. —Jean Mangaluz/VBL, GMA News
