Floods force evacuations as monsoon, Maymay batter Luzon

Flooding forced evacuations and disrupted daily activities in parts of Luzon on Thursday, August 6, 2026, as the southwest monsoon, enhanced by Tropical Depression #MaymayPH, continued to bring heavy rain across the region.

In Macabebe, Pampanga, floodwaters inundated several barangays. Homes in Barangay San Vicente were flooded, while residents and motorists struggled to pass through inundated roads in Barangay Telacsan. Overflowing river water in Barangay Saplad David further worsened flooding in the area.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said 14 barangays in Macabebe were affected by flooding, which was intensified by high tide. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.

In Zambales, 172 residents evacuated from flood-hit communities in Barangays San Vicente in Palauig; Malabon and Pamibian in Candelaria; and Canaynayan and San Fernando in Sta. Cruz.

Authorities also reported that a house in Barangay Pamonoran, Sta. Cruz was partially damaged after a tree fell on it on Wednesday.

Government work and classes at all levels in Zambales were suspended on Aug. 6 in line with Memorandum Circular No. 122 issued by Malacañang.

Meanwhile, Cabanatuan City in Nueva Ecija continued to experience cloudy skies with intermittent rain due to the southwest monsoon and Tropical Storm Maymay.

Government offices and classes at all levels also remained suspended across Nueva Ecija on Thursday, while some residents displaced by earlier flooding continued to stay in evacuation centers.

In Kalinga, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported that sections of the road in Barangays Bugnay and Luplupa in Tinglayan were reduced to one lane due to soil collapse. The Balbalan–Pinukpuk Road in Pinukpuk also became one-lane passable after clearing operations following a landslide.

In Mountain Province, an unstable slope made the road in Barangay Talubin, Bontoc impassable, while mudflow blocked the Mountain Province–Nueva Vizcaya Road in Sitio Finew, Barangay Samoki. Meanwhile, roads in Sitio Agadchang, Barangay Betwagan in Sadanga, and Sitio Purag, Barangay Banao in Natonin were reopened to one lane after clearing operations.

In Benguet, the Gov. Dangwa Road in Barangay Ampusongan, Bakun became one-lane passable after the DPWH and local government cleared debris. Marcos Highway in Sitio Caucalan, Taloy Sur, Tuba and Cosalan Road in Barangay Bila, Bokod were reopened to two-way traffic after mudflow was cleared.

However, sections of the Benguet–Nueva Vizcaya Road in Sitios Bangao and Bua in Bokod remained one-lane passable due to soil collapse, erosion, and fallen trees.

Benguet Governor Melchor Diclas also ordered the temporary suspension of all small-scale mining, quarrying, river-related, and tourism activities because of the continuing bad weather.

In La Trinidad, floodwaters from the swollen Bolo Creek reached the road leading to the Strawberry Farm and submerged nearby agricultural fields.

Authorities also carried out clearing operations in Sitio Pipingew, Barangay Lubas to restore road access and evacuate affected residents to evacuation centers.

In Itogon, the Luneta–Loacan Proper Junction in Barangay Loacan became impassable after the Antamok River overflowed due to high water levels and strong currents.

Meanwhile, the Baguio City government temporarily closed all public parks, except Burnham Park, as a precaution while severe weather conditions persist.—GMA Regional TV News
