Sibuyan fishermen defy ban on fishing anew

MANILA, Philippines - Saying they have no choice but to take their chances, fishermen in San Fernando town in Sibuyan Island in Romblon on Tuesday defied anew the fishing ban stemming from the threat of endosulfan contamination. DZBB's Carlo Mateo reported that as of Tuesday morning, at least 10 small motor boats left Sibuyan Island shores to go fishing. The fishermen argued they couldn’t just watch their families go hungry amid skyrocketing prices of food in the town, the report said. They also insisted that the water sample tests conducted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources show negative results for endusulfan coming from the capsized MV Princess of the Stars. Government imposed a fishing ban in San Fernando town after learning that the ill-fated vessel was carrying the chemical pesticide. - GMANews.TV
