UPLB launches 3-day SyenSaya science fest

MANILA, Philippines - The University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB) started its three-day SyenSaya science festival Wednesday as its share in the celebration of the National Science and Technology Week. Designed to be a pioneering science tourism program in the country, the holding of the science festival was spearheaded by the Los Baños Science Community Foundation Inc. (LBSCFI). Dr. Luis Rey I. Velasco, UPLB chancellor and LBSCFI president, said the festival aims to promote the town of Los Baños and the province of Laguna as premier science tourism and education destinations. SyenSaya will be a venue where people from all walks of life will come to understand, appreciate, discover, and value the role of science in their everyday lives, he added. Themed, "Making science work for you," this year’s festival offers a special feature in Wonderama, an exhibit of scientific discoveries of UPLB and other LBSCFI member-agencies. It will be on display from July 16-18 at Baker Hall in UPLB. SyenSaya will also feature a film showing and games – termed “discovery shows" – which shall highlight the fusion of arts and sciences, where art is the medium and science is the subject. Meanwhile, science tours of the LBSCFI agencies will be ongoing. The LBSCFI is a community of private and development agencies within and in the vicinity of the Los Baños Science and Nature City. For nearly 24 years, the LBSCFI has committed itself towards the creation of a model community by addressing priority needs of the Los Baños community and environs through creativity and innovation. It has several member-organizations that are strong in the fields of sciences, arts, business, and social services. - GMANews.TV
