'Nina' kills 2, injures 12 in Baguio landslide
BAGUIO CITY, Philippines â A mother and her daughter died while 12 others - including three children - were injured after a landslide caused by typhoon Nina buried their house here Monday afternoon. The fatalities were identified as Lolita Baroma, 70, and her daughter Juana Baroma, 43. Rescuers were able to recover their bodies but both were declared dead on the spot. Two other family members, who were not identified, were listed in critical condition at the Baguio General Hospital. Initial reports said that the landslide occurred between 3:30 to 4 p.m. Monday as "Nina" battered northern Philippines. The Baroma's two-storey house, located at Barangay Guisad Surong, was suddenly buried by cascading mud brought about by the heavy downpour. The house was actually occupied by three families. Among the 12 injured were three children. Others were students. Meanwhwile in Itogon, Benguet, rescuers said that the 13 trapped miners may be at the deepest in level 700. The rescuers are trying to suction the water but they are worried by the possibility of toxic fume suffocation which they said was the main cause of most underground deaths. Cordillera regional police director Chief Superintendent Eugene Martin admitted they thought about blasting the mine entrance to let out the water, but feared it may cause the mine to cave in. - GMANews.TV
