NPA rebels attack another Globe cell site in Negros

MANILA, Philippines — Suspected New People's Army rebels have destroyed another Globe Telecom cell site in Cauayan town in Negros Occidental province, an online news site reported Thursday. Visayan Daily Star (www.visayandailystar.com) quoted Cauayan police director Inspector Louie Figueroa as saying about 16 armed rebels peppered the facility with bullets on Tuesday night. The armed men also divested the cell site's lone security guard of his revolver upon entering the facility in Lina-on village in Cauayan. Figueroa said the rebels left untouched the nearby cellular site of Sun Telecoms about five meters away from the Globe Telecom communication facility. The incident occurred more than two weeks after suspected rebels also burned sugarcane plantations and a farm tractor in Cadiz City, and bombed heavy equipment in La Castellana town. Police suspect that the incident stemmed from Globe's "failure" to pay revolutionary taxes to the communist movement. Recovered from the site were an unexploded rifle grenade and 11 empty shells of M-16 and M-14 assault rifles. GMA
