51 fishermen arrested for illegal fishing off Iloilo

MANILA, Philippines - At least 51 fishermen were arrested off Ajuy town in Iloilo province for violating a fishing decree prohibiting the use of fine-mesh nets, a radio report said. Radio dzBB reported early Monday that the 51 were aboard 11 fishing boats when intercepted by local police off Nasidman village in Ajuy town. Police said the fishermen were using "hulbot-hulbot" (fine-mesh net) a fishing gear used as a herding device with hauling ropes passing through a metallic ring permanently attached to a tom weight. Fisheries Administrative Order No. 164 of 1987 penalizes the use of such gadgets with a fine of up to P5,000 and imprisonment of up to four years. - GMANews.TV
