Baby dies after being thrown off passenger vessel by mom

MANILA, Philippines - The wife of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) threw her one-year-old baby overboard before jumping off a passenger ship in Western Visayas Tuesday morning, a radio report said. Iloilo Coast Guard head Commander Harold Jarder said the child was thrown off a ship of Negros Navigation while it was heading for Bacolod City from Manila. Jarder, in an interview with Visayas-based Bombo Radyo, said the incident took place aboard the MV St. Peter the Apostle at about 8:45 a.m. He said the ship was passing Sicogon Island in Carles, Iloilo, when Flordeluna Pabuaya, 27, of Bacolod City, threw her son Jacob overboard, then dived into the water herself. Rescuers recovered the two at about 10:15 a.m. but Jacob was already dead. The Bombo Radyo report quoted in-laws of Flordeliza as saying she had a "suicidal instinct" and had tried to kill herself several times. She was to be turned over to police on arrival in Bacolod City. Flordeliza's father Leonardo Reyes said they already had her treated due to her claims that someone was chasing her and wanted to kill her and her son. - GMANews.TV
