(Update) Caticlan Airport closed after plane mishap

CATICLAN, Aklan - The operations of the Caticlan Airport here were temporarily closed after a plane of the Zest Air undershot the runway Sunday morning. At least three people were injured in the mishap. The chief of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) in Caticlan, Efren Nagrama, said the CAAP has launched an investigation on the incident. The injured were two children and a crew member. Authorities said that Zest Air MA60 flight 865 encountered strong winds, undershot the runway and then swerved to the left after touchdown, causing it to hit an airport wall. The left wing of the aircraft also hit the perimeter fence of the airport. At least 20 passengers were onboard, many of them European and Canadian tourists traveling to the holiday resort Boracay Island. Zest Air is formerly known as the Asian Spirit. Only one aircraft figured in the Caticlan Airport mishap and not two as inadvertently reported earlier by GMANews.TV. Because of the incident, other airline companies, such as the Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and the SEAIR re-routed their flights to nearby Kalibo Airport. - GMANews.TV (This update corrects an earlier report that two planes figured in the airport accident.)
