PNP in Cagayan Valley on alert vs. rebel attacks

TUGUEGARAO, Philippines – In anticipation of terrorist attacks, the Philippine National Police in Region 2 has placed its support units on alert for possible New People's Army (NPA) offensives against vital government and private installations. Police Superintendent Pedro Contapay said, the alert have been placed on Magat Dam in Ramon, Isabela and Cagayan Special Economic Zone (CSEZ) and Freeport in Santa Ana, Cagayan. The alert order came after investigation by the authorities revealed that the rebel group was behind attacks on cell phone sites in Isabela and Cagayan. Police officials said the order is also in preparation for any eventualities that may compromise the safety of residents living near the premises but also the security of the installations which are likely targets of the rebels. Magat Dam serves as a source of hydroelectric power and irrigation water for about 85,000 hectares of agricultural lands while the CSEZ is the emerging commercial, financial, and recreational center in the country’s northern region. - Floro Taguinod, GMANews.TV
