5 killed in collapse of portion of Cebu building


Five people were killed while six others were wounded after a portion of the Gaisano Capital Building in Cebu City collapsed before dawn on Wednesday. A GMA Flash Report said the incident occurred at about 1 a.m. The building, which is still being constructed, is located in the village of Tisa in Cebu City, capital of Cebu province in central Philippines.

The report quoted the emergency rescue unit workers as saying that the victims, all employees of CYP Construction, were rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center. A radio dzBB report identified those being treated at the Cebu City Medical Center as Arnel Pacible, 23; Jerome Seyosi, 23; Roel Pasajen, 19; Joey Mansera, 36; Noel Lucero, 26; and Ricardo Villegas, 27. Initial investigation showed that the victims were taking a break when a portion of the building collapsed. For his part, Cebu City Councilor Gerry Carillo said the city government should revoke the building permit issued to the owners of the Gaisano Capital Building. — Sophia Dedace/RSJ, GMANews.TV
