Child killed, dad hurt while transporting fireworks in Bulacan
A six-year-old child was killed while his father was injured while they were transporting some P14,000 worth of fireworks in Bulacan province Monday night.
The incident occurred at 8 p.m. Monday along Partida Road in Partida village in Norzagaray town in Bulacan, radio dzBB reported Tuesday.
The report said the child, initially identified as Silva, died while undergoing treatment at the Norzagaray Municipal Hospital.
It said the man, which the report identified as Noli Silva, the child's father, was still under observation.
An initial investigation showed the two victims, from Nueva Ecija, bought P14,000 worth of fireworks from Bocaue, Bulacan.
But the fireworks exploded while they were transporting the fireworks, the report said.
Police are still determining what caused the explosion.
More kids hurt by fireworks
Meanwhile, at least six more people injured by fireworks were brought to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City for treatment.
The injured included a four-year-old boy from Quezon City who was playing with the explosive "Piccolo." The boy sustained wounds in his hands.
But the more serious injury was that of a 10-year-old girl who was injured in the face and hands after a "bawang" she was playing with exploded.
President Benigno Aquino III has appealed to Filipinos to refrain from using firecrackers to celebrate the New Year, noting its harmful effects not only to people but also to the environment.
Aquino also ordered the Philippine National Police and other concerned agencies to intensify its drive against illegal firecrackers and arrest those found selling or using them. –KG, GMA News
