Death toll from rain from LPA rises to 2; 81-year-old latest fatality

An 81-year-old woman was the latest fatality from rain brought by a low-pressure area that entered Philippine territory last week, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Wednesday.

In its 8 a.m. update, the NDRRMC identified the latest fatality as Agripina Buhulano Minante, a resident of Himagtucan in Lagonoy town in Camarines Sur.

The NDRRMC said Minante drowned due to flash floods.

She was the second fatality in the wake of the rain and floods from the LPA. Earlier reported killed was Lea Alarcio, previously reported as Lilia Alarcio, 18.

Alarcio had fallen on the overflowed spillway in Buhi in Camarines Sur while crossing it.

One person was injured—Jocelyn Bamor, 46, while crossing the river in Cagsawa.

The NDRRMC also said several residents in various villages were evacuated, including those in 13 villages in Libon, Polangui and Jovellar in Bicol. The number of evacuees stood at 3,537, or 679 families.

Floods, landslides

In Central Visayas, strong current and rising water washed out houses in Tabuc Tubig, Batinguel, Canduay, Cadawinonan and Balugo in Dumaguete City; and Poblacion in Amlam.

Landslides were also reported in Busal and Pulang Bato in Cebu City, although there was no evacuation in those areas.

Rockslides were recorded in Himampangon in Manjuyod, Negros Oriental at the height of heavy rain but there was no reported damage to houses or evacuation.

On the other hand, residents in Baluan, Bula, Lagao and Katangawan in General Santos City; and Kawas in Alabel town in Sarangani province were evacuated due to flash floods.

The NDRRMC said the city council of General Santos is considering placing Buluan, Bula, Lagao and Katangwan under a state of calamity due to the damage caused by the LPA and the tail-end of the cold front.

Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said classes were suspended in Polangui in Albay on Wednesday due to continuous rain and flash floods. –KG, GMA News
