Aquino declares June 11 a special nonworking day in Rizal

June 11 will be a special nonworking day in Rizal province as it celebrates its 111th foundation day, Malacañang has declared.

President Benigno Aquino III issued this decree through Proclamation No. 377 signed by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. last May 10.

A Malacañang statement said this will give residents of Rizal province "full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies."

Rizal province was created on June 11, 1901, through Act No. 137. It consisted of 19 towns of Manila, and 14 towns of Morong Politico-Military District, or a total of 33 towns.

On November 7, 1975, Presidential Decree No. 824 incorporated the 12 most progressive towns of Rizal into the new Metro Manila area.

These included Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Taguig, Parañaque, Pateros, Makati, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Malabon, Navotas, Pasig and Marikina.

Metro Manila also included Valenzuela town, formerly of Bulacan, and the four cities of Manila, Quezon, Caloocan and Pasay.

Present-day Rizal Province is composed of San Mateo, Rodriguez (formerly Montalban), Cainta, Taytay, Angono, Antipolo, Binangonan, Teresa, Morong, Cardona, Tanay, Pililla, Baras, and Jalajala. — RSJ, GMA News
