Flood-hit town in Sarangani now under state of calamity
A flood-hit town in Sarangani province was placed under a state of calamity Wednesday after flash floods caused two deaths and affected 20 villages there this week.
The town of Glan was placed under such a state following a meeting of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, radio dzBB's Benjie Liwanag Jr. reported.
Residents in 20 villages in the area were also affected by the floods spawned by heavy rain, the report said.
National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council head Benito Ramos said that as of Wednesday afternoon, the death toll from the floods remained at two.
"Ang death toll nanatili sa dalawa, naka-rescue tayo ng 40. Isa pa ang missing, di pa makita hanggang ngayon," Ramos said in an interview on dzBB radio.
Ramos also said that as of Wednesday afternoon, the rain had stopped in Glan town.
However, he reminded fishermen in the area to refrain from going out to sea, now that a cyclone is approaching Philippine territory.
"Ipagpaliban muna natin ang pangingisda," he said. — RSJ, GMA News
