US nuclear-powered attack submarine to arrive in Subic Monday


USS Louisville (SSN 724), a nuclear-powered fast attack submarine of the Los
Angeles class design, will arrive in Subic Bay on Monday for a routine port
call. According to a news release of the United States Embassy in Manila, the visit will allow the ship to replenish supplies and give the crew an opportunity to rest.
The US Embassy said USS Louisville is the fourth United States ship to bear the name in honor of Louisville city, Kentucky.
According to the US Navy website, Louisville SSN 724 is one of the most advanced attack submarines in the world. Its mission is to seek out and destroy enemy ships and submarines It was commissioned on 8 November 1986 at the Naval Submarine Base, New London, Connecticut.
 
The ship is 360 feet long, weighs 6,900 tons, and is armed with sophisticated MK48 torpedoes and Tomahawk cruise missiles.
 
During Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm in the 1990s, Louisville made naval history by firing the first submarine launched Tomahawk cruise missile in combat. 
 
Louisville has primarily operated out of San Diego, California and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  - VVP, GMA News
