PAGASA: Flash floods, landslides threaten Mindoro, Palawan, West Visayas

Flash floods and landslides threaten Mindoro and Palawan in Southern Luzon and parts of Western Visayas due to an inter-tropical convergence zone, state weather forecasters said Monday.

 

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said other parts of Luzon including Metro Manila can expect isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

 

"Inaasahan natin malawakang pag-ulan (sa) Mindoro, Palawan at Kanlurang Visayas. Sa Mindanao meron ding malawakang pag-ulan (We expect widespread rain showers and thunderstorms in Mindoro, Palawan and Western Visayas, as well as Mindanao)," PAGASA forecaster Samuel Duran said in an interview on dzBB radio.

 

He said Metro Manila may have isolated rain, and a temperature range of 24 to 33 degrees Celsius.

 

But he said PAGASA has so far not yet detected any potential cyclone near the Philippine area of responsibility for now.

 

PAGASA's 5 a.m. bulletin said an ITCZ is now affecting Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

 

"Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms becoming cloudy with widespread rain over the Mindoro Provinces, Palawan and Western Visayas which may trigger flash floods and landslides," it said.

 

It added the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

 

Light to moderate winds blowing from the southeast will prevail over Luzon and coming from southwest to southeast over the rest of the country.

 

The coastal waters throughout the archipelago wil be slight to moderate. — ELR, GMA News
