Phivolcs: Magnitude-5 quakes rock Davao, Surigao


At least two earthquakes measuring magnitude 5 and greater rocked the Davao and Surigao areas shortly after noon Sunday, state seismologists said. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said a magnitude-5.2 quake hit the Davao del Sur area at 12:14 p.m. In its initial bulletin, Phivolcs said the epicenter was at 47 km southeast of Don Marcelino in Davao del Sur. It did not immediately cite specific areas where the quake was felt.

Phivolcs initially said no aftershock or damage was expected.    The United States Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 4.6, and estimated the epicenter at:
- 65 km south of Pondaguitan - 71 km east-southeast of Caburan - 101 km southeast of Malita - 110 km (68 miles) east of Malapatan

Meanwhile, a magnitude-5.0 quake was recorded in the Surigao del Norte area at 1:24 p.m.

Phivolcs said the epicenter was at 122 km northeast of Burgos in Surigao del Norte. It said no aftershock or damage was expected. — LBG, GMA News
