Temperature drops to 9.5 degrees in Baguio

A day after temperatures went down to a record-low in Metro Manila, it was Baguio City's turn to experience its coldest weather so far this year.

On Friday, the temperature in Baguio City went down to 9.5 degrees Celsius, state-run Philippines News Agency reported.

The PNA report said the cold temperature prompted residents and visitors to wear mufflers and thick sweaters.

"Cooler mornings are expected in the days ahead," it quoted PAGASA weatherman Efren Dalipog as saying.

However, the PNA report said the lowest recorded temperature in Baguio City was in January 1961, at 6.8 degrees Celsius.

In Metro Manila, PAGASA forecaster Buddy Javier said Metro Manila can still expect low temperatures this weekend, with the lowest forecast temperature at 20 degrees Celsius.

"So far ang pinakamababa 19.5 degrees. Ang temperature range for Friday ay 20 to 30 (Thursday saw the lowest temperature so far this year at 19.5 degrees. For Friday, the forecast temperature is 20 to 30 degrees)," he said in an interview on dzBB radio Friday.

He said the 19.5-degree temperature was recorded at Science Garden in Quezon City on Thursday.

A separate report on dzBB radio said temperatures dropped even lower Thursday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, at 18.8 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures were even lower at Clark (Pampanga) at 18.7 degrees; Basco (Batanes) at 15.2 degrees; and Baguio City at 11.2 degrees, the report added.

PAGASA forecasters earlier said the lower temperatures may last until at least February due to the northeast monsoon.  — ELR, GMA News
