Leni Robredo wins Congress seat in CamSur

Lawyer Leni Robredo, widow of the late Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo, has been proclaimed winner in the congressional race in Camarines Sur's third district.

Garnering 102,694 votes, Robredo was proclaimed before midnight Wednesday, according to GMA Naga reporter Avril Daja. Her opponent, Nelly Favis Villafuerte of the prominent Villafuerte political clan, has 31,364 votes.

The figure does not include results from Calabanga and Bombon towns—with 50,763 total voters—as they have yet to transmit results as of Wednesday night, Daja said.

In an interview with GMA News' Joseph Morong aired on GMA News TV's “State of the Nation” Wednesday night, Robredo dismissed comparisons to the late President Corazon Aquino, who was catapulted to the presidency in 1986 by the assassination of her husband, Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.

"Naku parang napakalaking challenge. Palagay ko malayo pa naman ako sa stature ni President Aquino. Pero siguro pareho in the sense na pareho kaming namatayan ng asawa, parehong may clamor 'yung tao. Pero sa akin naman nasa local at siya’y nasa national. Pero palagay ko 'yung pinakamalaking challenge kasi [ay] hindi mo ma-disappoint 'yung mga taong umaasa sa’yo," she said.

Her husband, Jesse, who served as Naga City mayor for many years before joining the Cabinet, died in a plane crash August last year. — Amanda Fernandez/KBK, GMA News
