Shallow magnitude 5.7 quake shakes North Cotabato, nearby parts of Mindanao
A shallow earthquake with epicenter near Carmen, North Cotabato shook parts of Mindanao late Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said in a bulletin.
Phivolcs said the magnitude 5.7 quake emanated from a depth of 5 kilometers, is tectonic in origin, and was felt at Intensity II, III and IV at these locations:
- Intensity IV - Matalam, North Cotabato
- Intensity III - Tacurong City, Marawi City; Kidapawan City; Cotabato City; Cagayan de Oro City
- Intensity II - Davao City; Valencia City; Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte
Phivolcs also said in the bulletin it expects the quake to have caused some damage and to have aftershocks.
Engr. Hermes Daquipa of the Phivolcs field office in Kidapawan City said the quake was felt at Intensity V in Carmen, IV in the towns of Matalam, President Roxas and Arakan. While intensity III was felt in Tacurong City, Marawi, Cagayan De Oro and Kidapawan City; and
Intensity II in Davao City, Valencia Bukidnon and in Polanco, Zamboanga del Sur.
Daquipa said the quake caused a landslide in Barangay Kimadsil in the town of Carmen. A house in the same barangay also sustained unspecified damage.
Cracks developed in the bridge that connects Kimadsil to the neighboring village, prompting residents to keep trucks and other heavy vehicles from using it. — ELR, GMA News
