School principal shot dead in Kalinga province — police

Three days before the opening of classes in the public elementary and high schools in the country, a school principal was shot dead in Tabuk City in Kalinga province, a belated police report said Sunday.

Kalinga police said the incident happened on May 31 at 9:55 p.m. in Purok 3, Bulanao Norte village.

The police report identified the victim as Alvino Lupnacan, 50, school principal of Cawagayan National High School, married and resident of Poruk 3, Bulanao Norte.

An initial investigation showed the victim had just finished eating supper and went out of their house to take a bath at the irrigation canal about 15 meters away from his residence, the report said.

While on his way to the irrigation area, he was shot by a still unidentified gunman who came from the steel bridge at the irrigation canal, it added.

Police said the victim was rushed to Almora General Hospital by his relatives but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival by the attending physician.

Authorities suspect the attacker used a shotgun as the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the chest.

Police are conducting a follow-up investigation on the incident, the report said.  — LBG, GMA News
