Endangered species from Palawan intercepted in Quezon

Authorities in Quezon province on Sunday night seized several endangered species, including birds, brought in from Palawan province.

Police in Lucena City have taken custody of the persons who tried to bring in the endangered species, radio dzBB's Peewee Bacuño reported Monday.

Citing sketchy initial information from Quezon police, the dzBB report said the species were intercepted at a checkpoint in Tayabas town in Quezon at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Among the endangered species recovered in the checkpoint operation were 173 mynah birds, three parrots, four Palawan hornbill birds, and five Palawan river otters.

The species have been turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources office in Quezon, the dzBB report said. A team from the DENR main office in Metro Manila was sent to the area.

However, the report did not immediately say how many people were taken into police custody.

Initial investigation showed the species were transported aboard a motor banca and brought to a port in Lucena City but were intercepted at the checkpoint operation. —KG, GMA News
