3 students drown in Cavite; bodies found in Laguna

(Updated 1 p.m., Aug. 30) A camping trip ended in tragedy for three students who drowned in Cavite but whose bodies were swept by the river all the way to Laguna province.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the victims drowned at 5 p.m. Sunday in Dismo River in Barangay Puting Kahoy in Silang town.

"The bodies of the victims were discovered (Tuesday) on the shore of San Cristobal Lake in Barangay Looc, Calamba City (in Laguna)," it said in its 6 a.m. Wednesday report.

It identified the three as:

- Jay Ehurango Mellapis, 22, Paradise Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro
- Kimberly Austria Guardias, 19, Aburoan Roxas, Palawan
- Catherine Codog Taroquin, 21, Langgam, San Pedro, Laguna

An earlier report on dzBB radio cited initial information from Laguna police indicating the three students had gone camping last weekend.

But according to Lailanie Antonio Fronda, a friend of the victims, the three were on a hiking trip done to hasten their travel back to school campus. — LBG/KBK, GMA News
