Talisay city council asks DOTC for lighthouse near site of Cebu ferry collision

The city council of Talisay in Cebu province urged the Department of Transportation and Communications to build a lighthouse at Lauis Ledge, site of last month's deadly collision between a passenger ship and a cargo vessel.

In passing the resolution, the Talisay City council said such a move could prevent a repeat of the Aug. 16 accident, the state-run Philippines News Agency reported Wednesday.

City Councilor Antonio Bacaltos Jr. proposed the resolution, saying the city must adopt measures to protect its residents from man-made or natural disasters.

Bacaltos also sent a copy of the resolution to Budget Secretary Florencio Abad to seek financial support for the lighthouse, the PNA report added.

As of Wednesday, at least 110 had been reported dead in the wake of the collision between MV Saint Thomas Aquinas 1 and MV Sulpicio Express Siete.

The accident also led to an oil spill that affected Cordova in Cebu, and prompted the provincial government to place the entire province under a state of calamity. — ELR, GMA News
