20 people confirmed killed in Quezon province road accident
(Updated 9:10 p.m.) The death toll from a predawn multi-vehicle smashup in Quezon province rose to 20 Saturday evening, including the driver of the truck believed to have caused the seven-vehicle colission.
One of the fatalities was a four-year-old boy who died while being treated in a hospital in Gumaca town, radio dzBB's Peewee Bacuño reported.
According to a report aired on "24 Oras," more than 40 were injured in the accident and were either brought or transferred to two hospitals in Quezon City.
At least one girl was also reported missing, even as it was not immediately clear if she was among the fatalities, the report said.
Initial investigation
Maharlika Road
The affected part of Maharlika Road in Atimonan town, near where the smashup happened at 1 a.m., was passable only to light vehicles, it added.
Most of the fatalities died on the spot according to a report from the provincial police.
Eleven of the 19 fatalities were identified as:

5. Henry Malaluan
6. Ronnie Villeja

The remaining eight have yet to be identified, according to the police report.
At least 40 were injured in the accident and were either brought or transferred to four hospitals namely: Doña Marta Memorial District Hospital, Emil Joahna Hospital, Gumaca District Hospital and a hospital in Lucena City.

Other vehicles involved in the accident were a forward truck, one Isarog bus (TYX 985), one DLTB Bus (UYA 669), a trailer truck (RMK 220) and a Wing Van truck.
Citing initial information, the radio report said most of the passengers aboard the Bicol-bound bus were from Capalonga town in Camarines Norte.

Initial investigation
Initial investigation by the Quezon Provincial Police show that the accident happened at around 1 a.m. at a steep slope along Maharlika Road. Investigators suspect the 10-wheeler truck that started the crash lost its breaks before smashing into the rear of the Superlines bus bound for Bicol.
A witness claimed to have seen the truck as it was speeding by before it slammed into a bus. The truck crashing against the bus set off a series of collisions that damaged five other vehicles.
Quezon Police Provincial Director Senior Superintendent Ronaldo Ilagan said authorities will have to continue its probe on the incident since they cannot get the truck driver's statement since he was already deceased.
"Titingnan natin kung nawalan nga ng preno yung truck. Hindi na natin makakausap tungkol [sa nangyari] yung driver kasi patay na siya," he said.
In lieu of filing criminal charges, police are looking at holding the truck's owner liable for civil charges.
According to Quezon police, the truck belongs to a certain Edgardo Tan in Batangas. He was reportedly not at his residence when police officers visited his address.
