Death toll from Bohol quake up to 195, damage breaches P1-B mark


The death toll from last week's magnitude-7.2 quake rose to 195 while the damage from the quake breached the P1-billion mark early Wednesday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.
 
In its 6 a.m. update, the NDRRMC also said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology had recorded 2,547 aftershocks, 64 of which were felt.
 
According to the NDRRMC, the latest fatality was Josefina Marimon, 77, of Catagbacan Norte in Loon town, one of the areas isolated by the quake.
 
Of the 195 fatalities, the NDRRMC said 182 were from Bohol, 12 from Cebu, and one from Siquijor.
 
It said at least 651 were injured, including 557 from Bohol. At least 12 were missing, all of them from Bohol.
 
The NDRRMC said the quake had affected 597,598 families or 2,991,143 people in 1,319 villages in 54 towns and six cities in six provinces.
 
Of these, 12,989 families or 71,387 people are staying in 99 evacuation centers.
 
Damage
 
The NDRRMC said the damage to property caused by the quake breached the P1-billion mark, at P1,097,292,000.
 
This included P898.171 million in Bohol, P197.401 million in Cebu, P1.45 million in Siquijor, and P270,000 in Negros Oriental.
 
Classrooms and school facilities declared unsafe had been cordoned off, while alternative learning sites had been determined for schools that sustained damage.
 
All Saints' Day
 
Meanwhile, a report on dzBB radio said the quake will not deter Bohol residents from paying respects to their dearly departed on All Saints' and All Souls' Days.
 
Several cemeteries were damaged in the wake of last week's quake, the report said.
 
In Antiquera town, at least 10 coffins were displaced by the quake. —KG, GMA News
