Yolanda makes landfall for 3rd time in Northern Cebu
(Updated 2:15 p.m.) - After making landfall twice Friday morning, Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) made landfall for the third time in Northern Cebu province in Central Visayas before noon.
PAGASA said the third landfall was over Daanbantayan at the northern tip of Cebu, radio dzBB's Sam Nielsen reported.
Yolanda first slammed into Guiuan in Eastern Samar earlier in the day. The second landfall was over Leyte province in the Dulag-Tolosa area.
However, PAGASA continues to track Yolanda for more possible landfalls throughout the day, the report said.
GMA resident meteorologist Nathaniel Cruz said on GMA News TV's "Balitanghali" Friday that it is not unusual for a typhoon to make several landfalls when it hits Visayas because several islands are scattered across the region.
"Pangkaraniwan na ang bagyo 'pag tumama sa Luzon, isang beses lang siyang tumatama sa lupa, at pagkatapos noon ay pupunta na [ito] sa West Philippine Sea o Taiwan. Pero kapag ang bagyo ay tumama sa Visayas, hindi lang isa o dalawa ang magiging landfall niyan," he said.
Cruz said seven to eight landfalls are sometimes recorded when typhoons pass through the Visayas region.
He added that although landfalls help weaken the strength of a typhoon, it is also possible for a storm to intensify when it passes through another sea before making its next landfall.
"Alam naman natin na ang dagat ang pinagkukunan ng lakas ng isang bagyo kaya nakakatulong sa isang bagyo na ito ay tatama sa lupa at dadaan sa dagat [bago] tumama sa lupa dahil kahit papaano ay hihina [ito]," he said.
The dzBB report said Yolanda may make possible landfall over:
- Estancia, Iloilo between noon and 1 p.m.
- Aklan between 2 and 3 p.m.
- Semirara between 4 and 5 p.m.
- southeast of Occidental Mindoro between 5 and 6 p.m.
- south of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro between 6 and 7 p.m.
- southwest of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro between 7 and 8 p.m.
- Busuanga, Palawan between 8 and 9 p.m.
Yolanda is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday. — With a report from Xianne Arcangel/RSJ/KG, GMA News
